Team Resources
Today more than ever, having the right team is vitally important to the success, growth, and longevity of your business.
Business teams today are not only more diverse, they are also more dispersed and digitally connected. Many see this as a problem to be solved. However, the wisest of us see this as an opportunity to achieve new heights of success and build teams that are much more flexible, reliable, and driven to make the the company successful.
Whether building a team from scratch or restructuring the team you currently have, the fundamentals that are required for an effective & efficient team are the same.
Current Direction - You must define clearly and explicitly the direction of the company and how that is defined for each of your team members. If this is left vague and unclear or is not individually defined for members of the team specifically, this can lead to a disconnect that can cause the entire team to falter in obtaining the objective set out by the company.
There should be a Primary Direction that is DNA level engrained in the company. This should serve as the company's guiding light, which keeps the Current Direction on track.
The Current Direction may change from time to time, but must always be compelling, and in line with the Primary Direction of the company.
Balance - The team must be formed with balance in its design. A team that is comprised of a diverse mix of skillsets, backgrounds, perspectives, ethnicities, and genders is prone to be more creative & successful.
This also allows the team to be more flexible in its ability to maneuver quickly when the need arises and helps avoid biased "groupthink" in those situations where that would be detrimental to the directional success of the business.
Access - In addition to the above fundamentals, Access is another necessity for a successful team. Team members must have access to the the tools, data, and education necessary for them to do their jobs to their highest level. This further allows them to also contribute to the overall team success, and therefore the company success.
Access to these areas, regardless of the size of the company or the level of access to start, is still extremely important to achieve a higher level of success.
The tools are highly dependent on the industry and specific company direction. Generally, the tools are software and hardware related, but can vary widely depending on the company. Research tools from your specific industry, see what the best in your industry are using and review those tools. Also, don't be afraid to look at similar tools from other industries. On many occasions, utilizing tools or methods from other industries have resulted in catapulting a company into hire levels of success because of an edge gained by utilizing such a tool.
The same is true for data access and education access. Each of these areas are vitally important, and will only become increasingly so as we move forward in time.
Culture - The thing that holds all this together and makes it work(or not work)over the long haul, is the culture of the company. The culture should be deeply connected to the Primary Direction that was mentioned earlier. This helps insure that the company as a whole equals more than the sum of its parts.
The culture of the company must originally come from the leadership of the company. This should be disseminated from the top down, and reaching every part of the company, regardless of size, location or level of contribution to the bottom line.
By ensuring this is done, with the right company culture, it will help prevent the problem of parts of the company being siloed or acting as such towards other parts. When a great culture exists in a company, there is typically more & faster communication of important and useful information, as well as easier & faster maneuverability of the company as a whole.
